Hardwood Flooring Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing the right approach for a hardwood floor can raise a lot of questions.
Homeowners often want to know whether an existing floor can be refinished, when replacement is necessary, which hardwood is appropriate for a new installation, or what is involved in creating a custom pattern.
Since 1976, I have worked with hardwood flooring in Connecticut, providing luxury installation, refinishing, replacement, restoration, historic wood floor preservation, and custom flooring.
At M B Kubisek, I approach each floor individually. The condition of the existing hardwood, architecture of the property, room dimensions, materials, and desired appearance can all affect what makes sense for a particular project.
The answers below cover some of the most common questions I receive about hardwood flooring and the services I provide.

General Hardwood Flooring Questions
How long have you been working with hardwood flooring?
I have worked with hardwood flooring since 1976. During five decades in the craft, I have gained experience with new installations, refinishing, restoration, replacement, historic wood floor preservation, and detailed custom flooring.
That experience allows me to evaluate a wide variety of hardwood flooring projects rather than approaching every floor with the same solution.
What hardwood flooring services do you provide?
I provide luxury hardwood floor installation, hardwood floor refinishing, hardwood floor replacement, restoration, historic floor preservation, and custom wood flooring.
My custom work includes wide plank floors, herringbone, parquet, medallions, borders, and distinctive geometric designs.
I work with homeowners who need everything from straightforward renewal of existing hardwood to one of a kind architectural flooring.
Do you personally work with homeowners on their flooring projects?
Yes. M B Kubisek represents my individual craftsmanship, and I take a personal approach to each hardwood flooring project.
I want to understand the property, existing flooring when applicable, and what you want to accomplish. This allows me to consider the flooring in relation to the home rather than treating it as an isolated surface.
Hardwood Floor Installation Questions
What types of hardwood flooring do you install?
I install traditional hardwood flooring as well as luxury and custom designs.
Projects can include wide plank hardwood in any species, herringbone, custom parquet, borders, medallions, and geometric designs.
The appropriate flooring depends on the architecture, dimensions of the space, and appearance you want to create.
What should I consider when choosing a new hardwood floor?
Wood species is important, but it is only one consideration.
Plank dimensions, flooring direction, room proportions, adjoining spaces, and architectural features can all affect the finished result.
For custom flooring, pattern and placement become especially important. A herringbone or parquet floor needs to be planned around the room so the design feels balanced.
I consider these elements together when discussing a new hardwood flooring project.
Do you install wide plank hardwood flooring?
Yes. Wide plank hardwood is an important part of my custom and luxury flooring work.
Wider boards can reveal more of the natural grain and variation in the wood, giving the flooring a substantial appearance. The right width depends on the room, architecture, material, and desired style.
I work with hardwood choices including European oak and white oak for wide plank installations.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing Questions
How do I know if my hardwood floors can be refinished?
The condition of the existing flooring needs to be evaluated before that determination can be made.
Scratches, dullness, fading, and normal surface wear do not necessarily mean hardwood needs to be replaced. Many floors can be renewed through refinishing.
The age of the floor, previous refinishing, repairs, damage, and overall condition can influence what is possible.
I evaluate the existing hardwood and consider whether refinishing, restoration, or replacement is the appropriate direction.
Should I refinish or replace my hardwood flooring?
If the existing hardwood remains suitable for preservation, refinishing can often be preferable to unnecessary replacement.
Replacement may need to be considered when a floor has significant deterioration, extensive damage, missing sections, or conditions that prevent refinishing from providing the desired result.
Because I work with refinishing, restoration, replacement, and new installation, I can consider the different possibilities based on the individual floor.
Can older hardwood floors still be refinished?
Age alone does not determine whether a hardwood floor can be refinished.
Some older floors contain quality wood that remains worth preserving despite years of visible wear. Other floors may have experienced previous alterations or damage that require a different approach.
I consider the actual condition and history of the flooring before determining what should be done.
Hardwood Floor Restoration Questions
Do you restore historic hardwood floors?
Yes. Historic wood floor preservation and restoration are part of my hardwood flooring experience.
Original floors may contain wood species, board dimensions, patterns, grain, and natural character that are difficult to reproduce. When worthwhile original hardwood can reasonably be retained, I believe preservation deserves careful consideration.
Is restoration different from refinishing?
Refinishing generally focuses on renewing an existing hardwood surface, while restoration can involve broader considerations when a floor has age, damage, missing material, previous alterations, or historic characteristics.
The appropriate approach depends on what is present.
Some older floors may primarily require refinishing, while others need more extensive restoration. In certain situations, a combination of preservation and selective replacement may need to be considered.
Why preserve an original hardwood floor?
Original hardwood can contribute significantly to the character and authenticity of a home.
Older floors may have dimensions, grain, materials, and natural aging that give them qualities a new floor would not duplicate exactly.
When the existing hardwood remains worth saving, preservation can maintain those characteristics while renewing the floor for continued use.
Hardwood Floor Replacement Questions
When should hardwood flooring be replaced?
Replacement may be appropriate when existing flooring has extensive deterioration, significant damage, missing material, or other conditions that make refinishing or restoration impractical.
Changes to the layout of a home can also create situations where new flooring is needed to establish better continuity between spaces.
I evaluate the existing hardwood before assuming complete replacement is necessary.
Can I change the style of my flooring when replacing it?
Yes. Hardwood floor replacement creates an opportunity to reconsider the material, plank width, direction, and overall design.
You might choose traditional white oak, wide plank European oak, herringbone, parquet, or another custom layout.
The new flooring can be selected according to the architecture and appearance you want for the renovated space.
Custom Wood Flooring Questions
What is custom wood flooring?
Custom wood flooring is designed around the individual property rather than relying solely on a standard plank layout.
My custom work includes wide plank floors, herringbone, parquet, medallions, borders, and geometric designs.
The flooring can range from understated wide plank hardwood to a highly detailed architectural pattern.
Do you create herringbone hardwood floors?
Yes. I install custom herringbone hardwood flooring.
Herringbone creates a distinctive repeating pattern that can work with traditional, transitional, and contemporary interiors. Careful planning is important because the direction, alignment, and proportions of the pattern influence how it relates to the room.
Do you create custom parquet flooring?
Yes. Custom parquet is one of the specialized types of hardwood flooring I provide.
Parquet uses individual wood elements to create repeated patterns. The scale and arrangement should be planned according to the dimensions and architecture of the space.
My goal is to create parquet flooring that feels naturally connected to the room rather than simply added as decoration.
Can you add borders or medallions to a hardwood floor?
Yes. Borders and medallions can be incorporated into custom hardwood flooring.
A border can frame a room or define a particular area within a larger space. A medallion can create a focal point in an entrance, foyer, or another prominent location.
The proportions and placement of these elements are important to achieving a balanced design.
Do you create geometric hardwood flooring?
Yes. Distinctive geometric designs are part of my custom wood flooring work.
These floors require careful consideration of scale, alignment, repetition, and the relationship between the pattern and surrounding architecture.
For homeowners seeking one of a kind flooring, geometric designs can make the hardwood itself an important architectural feature.
Hardwood Species and Style Questions
Do you work with white oak flooring?
Yes. White oak is one of the hardwood choices I work with for traditional and custom flooring.
Its natural character and versatility allow it to complement a range of interiors. White oak can be used for traditional plank flooring, wide plank installations, herringbone, parquet, and other custom layouts.
Do you install European oak flooring?
Yes. European oak can be an excellent choice for luxury hardwood flooring, particularly for homeowners interested in wide plank installations and a strong natural wood appearance.
The appropriate material depends on the property and the desired design.
Is wide plank flooring only for traditional homes?
No. Wide plank hardwood can work with traditional, transitional, and contemporary interiors.
The finished appearance depends on the wood, plank dimensions, flooring direction, and surrounding architecture.
I consider the complete space when determining how wide plank flooring can best be incorporated into a home.

Can you help me decide what to do with my existing hardwood?
